Parkville's 'Stanstock' Will Have Something for Every Musical Taste

The event's "menu" includes performances by 38 bands.

A little idea that's been kicking around in local musician Stan Gibson's head for some time will come to life in a big way this weekend.

Stanstock 2013, billed as "The Ultimate Maryland Musical Family Reunion," will play out over two stages at McAvoy's on Putty Hill Avenue, offering more than 35 hours of live music for just $10 a day.

"We're going to have great bands on the outside stage and great bands on the inside stage," festival social media director Russ Clarke said Monday. "We've got something for everyone—metal, classic rock, easy listening, Journey, Fleetwood Mac; if there's nothing you like, well ..."

The concert is for all ages and is family-oriented, according to Clarke.

The idea for the music festival was born from Baltimore Bands of the 70s, 80s 90s, a Facebook page created by Gibson about 18 months ago, according to Clarke.

The page quickly grew in popularity and now has more than 2,800 members.
Gibson wondered if he and others could seize the pawer and passion of that group and set up a music festival that would put a lot of good musicians on stage while also raising money for a good cause.

Gibson was joined by Kit Ten Chavis and Linda Wake-Garza as administrators of the Facebook page, and as the idea of the festival took shape, R Lee Townsend and Tom Carson came on board to organize musicians, Clarke said.

The music portion was off and running, while executive committee members chatted about a fundraising arm of the mega-concert.

"Undeniably, it was everyone's choice to have Stanstock benefit cancer—everyone either had lost someone to cancer or knows someone who is battling it," Clarke said. "We thought we'd use this event to celebrate victories together and mourn our losses as a family—cancer touches everyone."

Every element of Stanstock is donated, including the musicians' performances, the time of volunteer administrators, the venue and items for raffles and a silent auction, Clarke said.

Thirty-eight bands with more than 100 members will play over the course of Stanstock. Music presented will be that of the era of the 1970's, 80’s and 90’s, with some bands playing as they performed during that time and others creating tribute bands for this event.

Bands scheduled to play include Collage, Rob Fahey and The Pieces, Dave DeMarco Band, Tony Sciuto Band, Appaloosa, Great Train Robbery and Leather and Lace (a Fleetwood Mac tribute band).

The complete two-day schedule is available at the Stanstock 2013 website.

In addition to nonstop music, Stanstock will offer several raffles and a silent auction. A 50-50 raffle will be held each day, and a guitar donated by Bill's Music will be raffled as well.

"We're hoping to get every musician to sign the guitar," Clarke said.
Vendors will sell, food, beverages and crafts, according to Clarke.

All proceeds will benefit two cancer organizations— the Nicole Van Horn Trust Fund, which benefits the Johns Hopkins Pediatrics Oncology Center, and the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Folks unable to attend the concert can still make a donation to the cause by visiting the event's website.

"We hoping to raise $10,000," Clarke said. "And we will make this an annual event and next year's will be bigger and raise more money."
