Once Upon a Midnight Dreary

Celebrants gather to observe the birthday of Edgar Allan Poe

Happy Birthday, Edgar Allan Poe.

America's foremost purveyor of gothic and macabre writing is buried at Westminster Burying Ground at Fayette and Greene Streets.

Every year on the night of Jan. 18, and into the morning of the 19th, people congregate at Westminster to remember Poe and perhaps catch a glimpse of the Poe Toaster -- the mysterious stranger who sneaks into the cemetery every year and leaves three roses and a half-empty bottle of cognac at Poe's grave.

The forecast calls for snow and rain.

I'll be at Fayette and Greene tonight. Maybe you'll come down and shiver with me. In any event, check back tomorrow for a full report about events at Westminster tonight.
