St. Agnes to Bid on Cardinal Gibbons Property

Cal Ripken Foundation to preserve historic Babe Ruth Field.

 

St. Agnes Hospital is expected to announce the intent to acquire the former Cardinal Gibbons school property, a historic landmark at Wilkens and Caton avenues.

According to sources, the Cal Ripken Foundation is stepping up to the plate to preserve Babe Ruth Field, where the slugger learned to play baseball when the property was St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys.

Cardinal Gibbons operated as a middle school and high school from 1962 until 2010, when it was closed as part of a consolidation plan by the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

St. Agnes, a southwest Baltimore presence for 150 years, is holding a press conference at 2 p.m. to announce plans for the property. Check back with Arbutus Patch for ongoing coverage.
