Girl Scout Steps Up to Help Dog Rescue

A 12-year-old from the Frederick area helped raise money and awareness for Tails for Hope, a dog rescue with two Arbutus foster homes.

Philanthropy and the giving of charitable donations has no age limits.  Samantha Buntman of Monrovia, age 12, came forward to help raise money for Tails of Hope’s rescued dogs.  Her motivation came from a true genuine wish to help the dogs that were rescued from shelters and in the care of Tails of Hope. Tails of Hope Sanctuary is an all-volunteer non-profit organization which rescues dogs from high kill shelters that face euthanasia. The dogs may have correctable health or behavioral needs which we address before they become available for adoption. We provide a safe place for them while they await permanent homes, and we free up much-needed space at shelters.

The Director of Tails of Hope, Darla Feeheley, was invited to speak about dog rescue and all it entails at a Girl Scout Badge Day - Animal Helpers and Voice for Animals by the Frederick County Girl Scouts group-FROGS (Frederick County Older Girl Scouts).  Important for the girls to hear and learn about were topics of spay and neuter, “adopt, don't shop”, puppy mills along with what’s involved in rescue, fostering etc.   Samantha was one of the Girl Scouts attending. After the event was over, Samantha approached the director of the dog rescue wanting to do more to help the animals.  Being in middle school, she thought it was the perfect venue and opportunity to speak about rescue and encourage others to donate and help the mission to save shelter dogs.

With little supervision required, a very mature and motivated Samantha asked school administrators about putting up posters and showing photos of the dogs in need and relaying the dog rescue’s needs.  She wanted to make everyone aware of the need for costly veterinary care and fostering dogs to earn their confidence and trust when they’ve been neglected and abused and treated so poorly in their past.  Samantha brainstormed and thought the idea of making chocolate lollipops to sell would be something the students and teachers would like.  So as not to disturb school activity, she would sell them during lunch time when she could talk about the rescue to students and teachers.  Her fundraising was very successful.  Samantha raised $120 for Tails of Hope. With her enthusiasm and coordinated organizational skills, she managed to not only raise money, but in doing so raised awareness of the need to help rescue dogs.

Her family adopted a rescue dog and they encouraged Samantha to push forward with her wish to help a dog rescue organization.  Samantha’s role models are those who show compassion for animals and make life better for those animals who have suffered.  She’s a true example to others – no matter what age.  When asked, “What would you like to be when you grow up?” Samantha answered, “A singer who would donate to the rescue dogs and spread the word like other singers and actors.” A true philanthropist at age 12.  Tails of Hope is very grateful for Samantha’s efforts and empathy for the many dogs in need.
