ABPA Launches Farmers Market

Fresh local produce and goods every Thursday afternoon.

County executive Kevin Kamenetz and other local elected officials were on hand Thuesday afternoon to formally cut a ribbon -- and a cake from Bake Express -- to launch the weekly farmers market sponsored by Arbutus Business and Professional Association.

Local producers of fruits, vegetables, dairy products, baked goods, meats and other delicacies will be in the parking lot of Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department every Thursday afternoon from 2-6 p.m.

Farmers markets are a vital way of maintaining Baltimore County agriculture, Kamenetz said. About two-thirds of the county is zoned rural, he said.

Heather Barthel, of the MD Department of the Environment, said that eating local foods has a positive environmental impact as well as support the local economy.

Del. James Malone missed the ribbon-cutting, as he was attending to a medical emergency at the AVFD firehouse. Malone is senior first lieutenant at AVFD.

After the ribbon-cutting, Kamenetz joined the others browsing vendors and sampling goods for sale.
