Saint Agnes Hospital Announces Dr. Cunningham as Director of Pancreatic and Hepatobiliary Surgery

Saint Agnes Hospital recently announced that Dr. Steven C. Cunningham has been promoted to serve as Director of Pancreatic and Hepatobiliary Surgery.  Dr. Cunningham earned his MD from George Washington University, performed his general surgery residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center, and has completed fellowships in both oncology research and pancreatic and hepatobiliary surgery at Johns Hopkins University and Hospital.  He is board-certified in general surgery and certified by the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association.

While not the most common types of cancer, liver and pancreas cancers are among the deadliest; this is why Dr. Cunningham has focused much of his efforts on early detection.  Under Dr. Cunningham’s leadership, Saint Agnes provides specialized and expert treatment through the use of state-of-art technology, diagnostic breakthroughs and minimally invasive procedures.  Additionally, through the multidisciplinary team approach model – comprised of interventional radiologists, oncologists, pathologists, nurses and gastroenterologists, among others – patients receive an individualized plan that ensures the best care from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up.

 “This position will allow me to continue to offer world-class multidisciplinary and minimally invasive evaluation and treatment of pancreatic, biliary, and liver diseases in the comfortable and caring environment of the Saint Agnes community,” said Dr. Cunningham. 

In addition to his love for caring for Saint Agnes patients with pancreatic and hepatobiliary problems, he also leads an active research program at Saint Agnes Hospital and serves as the Cancer Liaison Physician between Saint Agnes Cancer Institute and the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer.

He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, the Society for Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, the Society for Surgical Oncology, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the Association for Academic Surgery, and the Pancreas Club.  Throughout his career Dr. Cunningham has been a prolific contributor and editor with nearly 100 contributions to a variety of medical journals, clinical guidelines, surgery textbooks, and other texts, including children’s literature.
