Whoever said that you can't go home again has never met Phillis Phillips Beach.  Beach has not only moved back to Violetville after being away for years, but she also hosts a happy hour gathering once a month at Kibby's Restaurant, on Wilkens Ave., that attracts many old friends who have moved away from the old neighborhood. It all began when Beach and her friend Terry Ross started a Facebook group called "We Were Violetville Teens of the 1970s" about 18 months ago.  "We only had about six people at the first happy hour," Beach said.  "Now we can have as many as 60 people show up." About 25 …
Ron Whitehead may finally receive help from the Baltimore County government in his long  fight to cleanup his neighborhood. Whitehead, president of the Riverview Community Association, said he has never received help from the county in the past.  "It's never happened," he said.  But Whitehead reached out to newly elected Councilman Tom Quirk for assistance in battling against trash in yards and other code violations. Quirk said he will work with the communities in his district on code enforcement issues. "It is important to have good communication lines with the communities," Quirk said. …
The news that two people died and three others were sickened by carbon monoxide on Guilford Avenue in Baltimore on Dec. 28 struck close to home, particularly coming on the heels of a Dec. 12 incident in Pikesville that killed two and injured 10 others. CO poisoning doesn't just happen to the other guy. It could have been us.  My wife and I were awakened early Dec. 17 to the loud beeping of our carbon monoxide detector. The red LED numbers blinked higher and higher: 65, 67, 69. Bleary-eyed, I leafed through the instruction manual. Reset the detector. Call 911. Done and done. The device …
Do you want to know what a good neighbor looks and acts like?  Watch the video and you'll see. An anonymous woman single-handedly saved stranded motorists stuck on the hill at the top of Mactavish Avenue, in Violetville, during Thursday's snow event. She could have stayed inside and done nothing. She could have cursed the drivers for causing a commotion in front of her house with their revving engines and spinning wheels.   But she didn't.   She grabbed a bucket of salt and sand and went to work.  She alone freed the log jam of stuck cars and made the road passable for others to follow. On …
The Riverview Community Association (RCA) held their fourth annual Christmas social at the YMCA Head Start building in 3200-block of Kessler Road in Riverview on Thursday night to celebrate the holidays and to spread good cheer.   About 35 people attended the affair. There was plenty of food and desserts on the tables and holiday music played softly from a stereo in the background.  The food was provided by the attendees.  "Everybody brought a dish," said RCA President Ron Whitehead.  "One person brought two hams." The RCA donated gift bags full of toys and candy for the children of the Head …
