UMBC Athletics' Week in Review (Week of 9/3-9/9)

In men’s soccer, senior back Liam Paddock came back to the Retriever lineup and scored an early goal, leading the Retrievers to a 1-0 victory at Mount St. Mary’s.

UMBC won its second straight and improved to 2-0-2 on the season, while the Mount fell to 1-3-0.

The Retrievers dominated the first portion of the game, taking four corners in the first six minutes of play. On their fifth attempt, just 7:41 into the game, senior midfielder Milo Kapor (Toronto, Ont./Emily Carr) took the corner from the left side and his serve found Paddock eight yards from the goal. The recently-named 2012 ECAC Division I Scholar-Athlete of the Year headed the ball just inside the far right post to give the visitors the early lead.

The volleyball team split its four matches in the 2012 Maddie Bingaman Tournament this weekend at the RAC Arena, sweeping Robert Morris and Howard, 3-0, but falling in five sets to Colorado and four sets to James Madison.

Playing in front of the largest crowd to ever watch a collegiate volleyball contest at the RAC Arena, the UMBC volleyball team fell to Colorado, 3-2 (25-17, 21-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-6), in a tightly-played match, Friday night on the first day of the tournament. The crowd of 1,021 nearly doubled the school record that was set three years ago at the same tournament when the Retrievers took on Long Island and Northeastern in front of 537 spectators.

Senior Ali Loynachan and sophomore Hannah Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) each registered nine kills for UMBC (3-8) as freshman setter Paige Miller used six different teammates to match a career-high with 46 assists.

The UMBC men’s lacrosse team will open its 2012 fall competition schedule on Thurs. Sept. 20 when they welcome Keio University of Japan for the fifth time in the past 11 years. The time for the scrimmage at UMBC Stadium is 4:30 p.m.
