Cavey: Huff Should Be Treated Fairly

The former head of the Baltimore County Republican Central Committee says Councilman Todd Huff shouldn't resign his seat.

Huff, a Timonium Republican, was arrested early Saturday morning and charged with drunken driving-related offenses after an intoximeter test showed his blood alcohol level to be more than twice the legal limit, according to court records.

In 2009, Chris Cavey, then the chairman of the county party, called for the resignation of then Councilman Sam Moxley following the Catonsville Democrat's second drunken driving arrest.

But Moxley didn't resign and was not forced out of office. He ultimately decided not to run for re-election in 2010.

Cavey said that set the bar for how all County Councilmembers should be treated.

"I think everybody was lenient with [Moxley] the second time around," Cavey said. "this is Todd's first time around. I think all councilmembers should be treated equally regardless of party. Let's see if they are.

"Deep down in my soul, I believe they should be treated equally," said Cavey, whose job once was to be "the most partisan Republican in Baltimore County."

Now, three years removed from that post, Cavey said he's not "calling for [Huff's] head."

"If they cut Moxley a break, they should give Todd a break," Cavey said.

Is this "they 're part time Buck"? Really, why not take a week and follow them around and listen to the calls and attend the meetings. Then after that week let us hear how "part time" the position is. You are either ignorant of what the job entails or ill informed.

Buck, I just want everyone to know that my wife, Rebecca Dongarra was at the grocery store when this post by "R Dongarra" was made. I will be forwarding the receipt from her post to Mr. Sears and will be asking patch to see if they can find out who this poser really is. More than likely it is the work of people who simply want her to look bad and this forum allow them the opportunity to do so.

Chris Cavey is a hypocrite plain and simple. When it was a democrat burn them at the stake but now ,lets be tolerant. I agree with that but to hear Cavey speak it makes me ill knowing his past vitriol.

I would like to know why my tax dollars are paying for a Councilman to drive a county vehicle to the Elks lodge, was he there on government business?

So Cavey actually puts politics above public safety. He calls for Moxley's oust who is a Democrat, and since it didn't occur, than for Huff to stay on? Just incredible. Isn't there a higher issue here? Public safety? Huff was (allegedly) driving at 2:30am. lights off, drives well into a red light intersection, believes he is 'above the law' and then blows a .20. If Cavey had any credibility to begin with, it has now been lost with his clear ignorance of what is really important here - compliance with the law, and public safety.

Cavey is a clique player...politics are his game board...he plays politics relentlessly like a sport...problem is, most player's will say or do anything to win...there are no rules...just various cliques that live to play the game at the expense of apathetic tax payers. Cavey is an insurance salesman...at best. The rest is all show, no go...
Probably gets him invited to the Elks Club parties though..

There was a lack of judgement to drive a car under those conditions, Politics doesn't really enter into this. Bringing up party affiliation might make the "other" party feel they are without guilt but we know different. Many people would love to be just let go "when caught" but that is not how it works. I'm sure many people will monitor this very closely. Hope this is a lesson that will change his life for the better .This publicity might make more people aware of the consequences... I hope so.

I doubt there are many who don't already know the penalties and someone who has broken them already. It doesn't deter all because this is a nasty disease with real addicts who rather keep drinking and driving than avoid the consequences.

It is in fact a vicious cycle that encompasses a life...in this case the responsibility that Huff has assumed for the community is probably overwhelming is ability to cope...bottom of the cycle...hopefully for is sake...bad for the counties sake though..

In my humble opinion it should be mandatory alcohol treatment first rather than jail time first. But it is necessary to hold their feet to the fire, somehow to enforce the law and prevent senseless injuries on the highways. Perhaps we could take a sparsely populated state and make an area for all who drink and drive to live out their natual lives with each other. A place where all could still drive but only be able to kill and mame each other. The thought of going to such a place might deter those drinkers even more from driving than current law/punishments.

The really sad truth is that most politicians once elected just look down their noses at the rest of us and do what they please. That's what got us 'free trade agreements' and all the rest that is destroying this nation. Drinking and driving while using a county car comes natural to politicians. They think of it as their right.

There are many opinions but the one constant is that he should be treated fairly. The only issue from there is to let the laws and the system that enforces those laws decide. Then there is the issue on the policy for someone in his position and dealing with that with concern for what is fair to those who represents and weather he has put those folks at compromise. This is a fair concern as well. The one thing can say with certainty is that Moxley’s treatment or a comparative to how he was treated should not be the benchmark for fairness. That is a plain stupid benchmark and the person who made it Cavey is compromised at least and suspect at best.

Republicans are shamefully embarrassing hypocrites for calling for GOP Councilman Todd Huff to stay in office when he ought to be tried, convicted and put in prison. IS THREE TIMES FOR DUI NOT ENOUGH FOR A COUNCILMAN, MUCH LESS ANYONE TO BE FREE TO DRIVE OUR ROADS DRUNK SO AS TO INJURE OR KILL OTHER DRIVERS?????

How sick! How sad! No wonder the GOP isn't a real political party in Maryland or Baltimore County. Had this been a Democrat, the right-wing tea partiers would be calling for him to resign immediately and then: 'off with his head." Mere hypocrites from the SO-CALLED "FAMILY VALUES" PARTY! Live up to this one, GOP!

I agree with you Scott the Republican party is by far the more hypocritical party and that is why they can’t get footing in Maryland. I have zero love for the Democratic Party either but I concede that the bigger difference is they are right up front with their delusions and their schemes and you know what you are getting. I can’t vote for either but with the Democrats I can take them and their child like belief in the tooth fairy policies any day over the phonies in the Republican party. Just like the stock market where there is all kinds of money on the side lines, I believe the greater share of voters are on the sidelines to.

I agree Tony, Baltimore County has devolved to a group of very apathetic communities that seem to remain stuck in the struggle of day to day making ends meet....it takes time to keep up with all the bullshit that gets dealt...time the greater share don't seem to have.

Tony, this is pretty much my view on the political situation in the country as well.
One party is terrible, the other even worse.

Human rights and social policy ultimately tend to tip me towards the Dems, however it doesn't prevent me from voting against them on referendums such as the gambling referendum or the "Dream" Act.

People who are purely one side or the other - these are the people who seriously scare me. You have to be a special kind of ignorant (I'll be polite here) to fall into this category.

I love this quote, "Cavey said that set the bar for how all County Councilmembers should be treated.", referring to Moxley's tribulations.

Let's see setting the bar; Like the Limbo Rock, "how low can you go!" A lot of thought must have gone into that statement.

Moxley leaves the council with a pension and is rehired to the Kamenetz administration with two DWI arrests. Chris how can you raise the bar when it's already on the floor and no one has the will to lift it.

Then again what bar are you talking about? There are a lot of them in Towson.

It sounds to me as if you are putting the cart before the horse or in this case the bottle because you speak of deals with the courts and not with the sound judgement it takes to be an elected official of our government.

I can see one transgression but not what is already out there and what is to come. This is not the person who should be leading us in this particular role.

Buck I wrote and produced a whole traffic safety program slide presentation on the same subject. This young girl got into her friends car. Her friend was drunk and she killed a child. The passenger said she felt so bad she would never again in her life get into a vehicle with a drunk driver and guess what? She did!

Now she to is dead.

Amazing the amount of stupidity among the enlightened. He did not make a one time poor choice number one, first cop rule, this was not there first time, just there first time getting caught. Secondly he operates under the belief he is above the law because of his circle of influence, which in all honesty works well in the hands of a skilled manipulator. Obviously at twice the legal limit quick thinking is not so quick ,so with lower brain function survival mode kicks in hence Chief of police. Unfortunately for some we are seeking a new view on our world and the ancient way all of us still view?? our fellow humans. If you believe the idea of privilege and special treatment are a foundation for success you truly have no concept of integrity.
