Hollywood rolls out its list of blockbusters with The Avengers.
A few sequels, one or two reboots, and Johnny Depp in weird costumes. The summer movie season is about to start. MTV is calling 2012 a nerdy movie summer, and also one of the biggest. Says MTV: It's a crowded landscape to be sure; you'll want to spend your hard-earned theatergoing cash wisely if you want to weed out the fantastic, can't-miss movies from the [ugly], must-miss ones. Here's a few of the movies planned for the summer. Which ones excite you the most? Did we miss any? Tell us in the comments.

Narrated by John Waters, "Of Dolls and Murder" is an award-winning film about an unusual collection at the Maryland medical examiner's office and the growing public fascination with forensic science.
An award-winning documentary about a unique collection of miniature death scenes and the woman who made them is slated to have its Baltimore-area premiere at the Hollywood Theatre on June 5. Of Dolls and Murder, by Minneapolis filmmaker Susan Marks, is about the Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death, an unusual set of 19 dollhouse-size crime scene models at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore. The Nutshell Studies were hand-crafted in the 1930-40s by Frances Glessner Lee, a wealthy Chicago socialite who founded a program to train police in forensic investigation. The models are still used for training to this day. Largely based on actual cases, each model depicts death scenes in exquisite detail--with working lights, …

If you don't have a criminal record or a wife, you might have a shot.
ABC TV is looking for a location in Baltimore in which to have an open casting call for the reality show, "The Bachelor," according to news reports. Both women and men can apply. Applicants "must not currently be involved in a committed intimate relationship, which includes: any marital relationship (whether or not the parties are separated or currently in the process of divorcing or annulling such marriage); any co-habitation relationship involving physical intimacy; or a monogamous dating relationship more than two months in duration," according to ABC's website. Applicants also must never have been convicted of a felony, or be a candidate for political office. Surely, area Baltimoreans have something to say about that. Comments?

As I waited for Mitt Romney to enter his town hall meeting in Arbutus, I took note of the songs playing on the PA system.
How do you entertain a hyped audience of Mitt Romney supporters as they wait for the Republican presidential candidate? Play some good tunes, of course. Before Romney’s campaign song, Kid Rock’s “Born Free,” played, and before he spoke to a packed house at Arbutus’ Dewey Lowman American Legion Post 109, a playlist consisting almost entirely of songs I have my own iPod played. I’m not sure what it all means, but it seems like the majority of the music was Motown or classic rock – songs that have a multi-generational appeal. I did miss a song or two, after all I was covering a presidential candidate’s town hall meeting, but here is the playlist from what I could tell: 1. Martha and the Vandellas – “Dancing in the Street” This is a pretty …

Friends and colleagues attended a public memorial for Ron Smith, the longtime WBAL radio talk show host who died in December.
WBAL Radio has video and audio from the service. Before he died, Ron Smith told friends not to pity him, mourn him or cry for him while he was alive or after he was gone. There was plenty of mourning, and a little crying, but also laughter and joy at a public memorial service for Smith, the popular former WBAL radio talk show host, in Kraushaar Auditorium on the campus of Goucher College in Towson on Tuesday. Onstage, several yards from the Ravens purple-draped lectern, were a folded American flag and a WBAL microphone, upon which shone a lone spotlight. Smith died Dec. 19 at age 70, following a brief but public battle with pancreatic cancer. Hundreds of friends, colleagues and dignitaries turned out for the ceremony, including U.S. …

"If Poe's accomplishments are not preserved, what does that say about our own lives?” asks actor M.S. Sanders.
“Poe was always great not only in his noble conceptions but also as a prankster …” —Charles Baudelaire The ghost of Edgar Allan Poe has been floating around town these last few weeks, unmoored and searching for an abandoned dwelling in case he is locked out of 203 N. Amity Street on Jan. 1. In these sparse economic times, funding for the Poe House has been slashed and its doors are slated to shut. Lined up across from center, his apparition spooked Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez before his first fumble last Sunday night. Poe has significant ties to the purple and black, just ask Raven mascots Edgar and Allan. Pennies for Poe, PoetryInBaltimore.com, The Hamilton Arts Collective, and Area 405 have joined forces to put up the corporeal form …

I had a terrific time at the Arbutus Arts Festival. The day just flew by. Our booth was right next to WPCRO, and we had a steady stream of people stopping by to visit. It was great to meet some people who I'd only known by name, and to make a lot of new friends as well. Arbutus Patch got a lot of nice feedback, and a few people suggested things that we could do better. It was amazing when people …   more ›
