Santa Breakfast Comic Book Has Some Seeing Red

An unknown number of age-inappropriate comic books distributed at Lansdowne event.

Some kids who attended last Saturday's annual Breakfast with Santa sponsored by Lansdowne Volunteer Fire Department and Our Savior Lutheran Church may have found an unexpected surprise in their goodie bag--a comic book not intended for young eyes.

Along with pancakes, eggs and bacon, children made holiday-themed crafts and had an opportunity to have a photo with Santa during the Dec. 10 event. They were also given a goodie bag containing treats and a comic book.

The event sponsors discovered--too late--that a bin containing about 200 donated comic books had at least one marked "for mature readers."

"As we were cleaning up after the event, we were horrified to discover that among the comic books which were donated to the church and handed out by Santa at the event were some that are inappropriate in content for children," said Kristi Kunkle, pastor of Our Savior.

"You have our deep apologies and hope for your understanding and forgiveness," said a note posted to the LVFD web site.

Event sponsors encourage parents who attended the event to check for material that may not be age-appropriate.

No complaints were reported. Efforts to locate an offended participant were unsuccessful.

This happened to us last summer. Our program, Mid Atlantic Burn Camp, which serves burn survivors from ages 8 through 18, had a Superhero theme. We received a comic book donation from a very, very well known local distributor (the donation was small compared with the generosity of some of our other donors). When we were placing the comic books in back packs for the campers to take home, I discovered that many of the books were rated over 18, and many were "very adult". Luckily we found this before the comic books reached the campers, their parents and their families. I do not know what the donor was thinking but this was inappropriate. There are many good burn prevention comics available through fire departments and burn centers. Thank you, Peggy Schmitt

Since it was 1 book in a box of 200, it was obviously an oversight and unintentional. Things get misplaced and (it seems) a couple of people did not catch the book in question: the person donating them and the person putting the goodie bags together.
