Residents Upset by Bench Vandalism
Bench donated for Arbutus bus stop by Pasadena resident damaged, marred with spray paint.
It's a comparatively small matter, in the great scheme of things. But to many residents in the Arbutus area, vandalism to a bench on Westland Boulevard and Circle Drive struck a nerve.
The bench is a sorry sight, with slats of the backrest kicked out, tagged with spray painted graffiti and littered with trash.
"I can't believe what I'm looking at," wrote Pete Kriscumas, an Arbutus resident and community liaison for Councilman Tom Quirk, on Facebook. "This is a huge disappointment to me."
For many, the thoughtless act of petty destruction is a quality of life issue that is yet another indication of a perceived decline in the neighborhood.
Installed less than eight months ago, the bench was hand-crafted by Bud Coking, of Pasadena, and donated to the Arbutus community.
Last year, Arbutus Improvement Association--which usually sticks to projects in its base neighborhood on the other side of UMBC--undertook an effort to replace a bench that used to be located on the northbound bus stop on Westland.
Neither the Mass Transit Administration nor Baltimore County were anxious to replace the bench that had been located on that spot for years, according to sources.
Initially, Kruscumas said that he intended to ask the Lansdowne Home Depot to donate a bench.
But Barry Miller, a Halethorpe resident and realtor at EXiT Results Realty of Catonsville, suggested an alternative--his Uncle Bud in Pasadena.
With about $250 in materials, Coking built the sturdy bench, which was installed with little fanfare on Dec. 17, 2011.
There was no marker or advertising on the bench, but it stood for almost eight months as an act of kindness among neighbors.
Today, those who were touched by the gesture are heartbroken.
"I am beyond upset over this," said AIA president Nikki Marlatt-Young on Facebook. "To have this type of respect for property is extremely sad."
"Unbelievable," Arbutus resident Chrissy Highes Stafford commented on Facebook of the damaged bench. "It sickens me to no end."
Marlatt-Young said that AIA is looking into repairing the bench.

Fair enough to say that the bus routes have immensely helped to change and decrease the "niceness" around Arbutus/Halethorpe. More places than others of course, but people just don't respect others property, or think that they have to right to destroy or take what they want. That's truly a shame. But it does not surprise me, unfortunately.

What a shame. Mr. Miller did such a good deed to benefit the neighborhood, and a few miscreants shamefully vandalized it. We have very similar problems with vandalism and graffiti of public property in our neighborhood. Recognizing that if left unaddressed it will propagate, so we have several volunteer members who regularly paint over or remove graffiti through our neighborhood. It can be disheartening to watch it recur constantly. This beautiful bench being of natural wood finish will present a real challenge in removing it or covering it.The damage was done by only a few disrespectful people, but being so visible to many passers-by gives the wrong impression to them that this destruction represents all the neighborhood residents. We encourage the Palladi neighborhood join together to keep graffiti eradicated.

Not only did the vandals damage this donated bench but they stole the community's right to have something nice! What a shame!!!!!
Unless the area of Maiden Choice steps up to reform their community association there is really nothing more that can be done.
by the way..... if anyone is interested I can provide the name & contact information for the former President of the Maiden Choice Improvement Association!
Reason the MCIA folded is she no longer lives in the area (out of state) and no one wanted to take it over when she left.... but she is willing to give all the information to help reform, but someone needs to step up!!!!
People need to TAKE THEIR COMMUNITIES BACK!!!!
Its only our property values at risk!!!!!!
Someone once said at one time Arbutus was the hardest area's to purchase a home, now its the hardest area to sell that home! There is no guessing why!

I lived on Linden Ave for 10 yrs, not far from where this bench sets. I ran around with kids that lived in the Palladi homes, and is was always safe and clean there. I have seen a difference since then. Recently there was an untagged car sitting in a side yard of a house at Linden Ave.and Westland Blvd. for several years. The yard had a lot of other junk stored in it too. All this was clearly visible to passers-by and it became to represent the entire neighborhood to anyone not driving further into the Palladi homes neighborhood to see that most are kept up pretty well. Just 100 feet from this bench now, the same couple of graffiti tags have adorned the Westland Blvd. bridge over the Beltway for 2 years now. People in the Palladi homes, when you see that the State Highway Admin. had not painted over this in a reasonable time, you as a concerned citizen and homeowner should be on the horn with your elected representative or government agency representative requesting that it be removed or painted over. If you don't stay active in the community it will atrophy like an in active muscle.

I was told Quirk was in our area, haven't seen any changes. My belief it seems like its intentional that the local Government is trying to devalue the area for low end housing. Over the years some immigrants or broken English will come up and ask the neighbors if the owner of the house for sale will take 130K CASH, The house on the market is 190K? I don't know what’s going on but most people have a 15-30yr mortgage Something is not right? The neighbor that talked to told Quirk said his expression looked like the cats out of the bag when he told them, I wasn't there so Quirk could have just surprised but who knows. The neighborhood has taken action over the years but nothing is done like that Rat issue goes back 7 years when it looked like an ant colony. We hardly have any now due to our team work. A lot of the houses are renters in the area. Landlords just let the houses run down.devalue the homes collect the money and sell the house cheap. When the Landlords and apartment complexes out number home owners not much you can do. Remember Clark Avenue for HUD I guess they may have gone with plan B and we were not aware that plan B went into effect. Just like the Promenade and other construction. We don’t have any say except words they listen to satisfy you then walk away. Call me Crazy but we have no control of the Government now.

Hi Chillin, One of the problems is with the Immigration, they don't believe in calling police FACT, Then you have house's that are being rented without landlord permits (Niki knows who). The landlords let the property run down Tenets don't want get involved turning landlord in. Some owners have up to 35 homes in the county.
I have Commented before People are afraid PERIOD. This is a Serious Situation. If you take notice ALL counties with city zip codes are in decline I have no idea the connection? When you do step up to the plate you wind up with Intellectual Thugism explained here when you speak of our issues.

Nikki Marlatt-Young I comment of how great a job your area does but everyone lacked the understanding. This is what I was criticized for nonparticipating and the understanding of direct cause, and root cause. Now you might understand now what to focus on. Direct cause: Vandalism, Root cause? The good work will be fruitless unless the root cause is contained. The article "Is arbutus going down hill? Some views Articles like that need to be on going blog of critical thought and dialogue on a continuous bases

Making a “United Arbutus Assn.” would be a great start each area with a neighborhood Respective consisting of two from each, Renter and home owner. Elect a president as a represent the united area. The renters will not be afraid to speak if they are supported and backed by the “United Group”. The two representatives will meet with the President to take action. To keep the reps and president in check from political and any other outside influences and maintain critical thought and dialogue on a continuous bases. Then we could have a party for the accomplishments similar to Arts fest. Each neighborhood would have representatives’ booths for new neighbors and local officials in attendance to hear all our voices. With Citizens to busy a website and Registered blog would reach out to all working, health issues or have issues with public speaking.

Arbutus Town Crier- I thik you’re ideas can work this is a modal that all demacracies need to be can be with people that can understand. We first need to unite only people that get it. that they see our government is corrupt and can not be trusted not know wear we meet and not let them know what how we our planning for “northern Arbutus”. If they know are plan it will fail from a collusion of undermining ideas deep from the democrats &there operatives. They are many, can see them I know some that listen on my cell phone,it clicks a lot when I talk on it. Better should give into renters at this pointe, but not landlords. Will landlords have a seat on committte? Can’t let Quirk in meetings til zip code changed is. That is when we him let he know we changed District 1 boundries in two territories. Can no longer control us. New councilman will we demand be loyal to us and US. Consttution. Must be have to able to recite in entirety. I’m in… Where..when? Please encrypt that they won’t catch on(you know who).
