Poll: Maryland Doesn't Drink Beer? What?

Maryland ranks 47th in beer consumption in the U.S.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer," Abraham Lincoln once said.

Apparently, people in the tri-state area do not track with the 17th president of the United States, and select other beverages to meet national crises.

Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia all rank in the bottom third of annual shipment and consumption of beer, according to a study from the Beer Institute, quoted by the Washington Business Journal.

Since 2003, the Beer Institute has been tracking “Shipments of Malt Beverages and Per Capita Consumption by State” for persons 21 years and older across all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

New Hampshire ranked No. 1 in 2011, with a per capita consumption of 43 gallons per resident of legal age, while Utah ranked No. 51 with 19.2 gallons per resident.

Maryland ranked the lowest of local states, coming in at No. 47 with 23.3 gallons per resident, Virginia at No. 36 with 27.3 gallons and the District at No. 32 with 28 gallons.

You wouldn't know it from all those tailgates at Ravens games. So what do you drink? Wine, liquor, beer? Take our poll.

Abraham Lincoln was our 16th president, not the 17th.

Obviously, I've diversified my consumption too much. My answer to the posted polls is: "Yes." It's good to have a balanced diet.
