County Planning Board Approves Bike Plan

The comprehensive bike plan would add trails, signs and bike lanes throughout the western side of the county.

The comprehensive bike plan for western Baltimore County is one step closer to reality after the Baltimore County Planning Board approved it last week.

At its meeting on April 19, the board unanimously approved the plan, which is a master plan for bicycle and pedestrian improvements for the western portion of Baltimore County.

The eastern portion was completed in 2006. The western plan includes the southwestern portion of Baltimore County, through Owings Mills, Reisterstown, Hunt Valley and Timonium.

The major improvements for southwest Baltimore County include:

  1. Creating a Patapsco River path from the Baltimore city line through the edge of southwest Baltimore County that could link UMBC to the city
  2. Extending the Short Line trail into Baltimore city
  3. Trails that connect UMBC to both downtown Arbutus and Catonsville

Earlier this month, Catonsville and Arbutus residents testified in support of the plan at a public hearing before the board.

While no funding has yet been attached to any of the projects, Baltimore County Councilman Tom Quirk told Patch last week that approving the plan is the first step towards implementing some of them.

The plan will now be scheduled for a vote before the Baltimore County Council at a later date.

Nero didn't know how to fiddle - and providing a bike lane on some streets and tamping down some trails isn't going to bust the piggy bank of "The State of MD" - spending millions on failing educational, environmental and financial solutions - now, let's consider them...

Have you read the plan? Baltimore County is not committing much capital to this plan. They can't. They don't have the money. They did agree to include the bike plan in future road projects. They've agreed to some striping of bike lanes and a few crosswalks. By doing s few simple things, we can enable residents and students to reach two business centers and the MARC train. Trails improve economic development in nearby communities and help bring back Main Streets and local shopping. Catonsville Rails To Trails (CRTT) is bringing private, federal and some state funding together to create the 2.2 mile Short Line Trail. It will mean less cars on the road and hopefully, a better environment. Volunteers have been working on this project for 10 years and are doing the heavy lifting in this case. We feel it is a worthy project. Don't bash trails! They are good for communities.

Sorry! Every community that has trails have problems with crime, robbery, assault, rape etc. This includes Columbia, Anne Arundel County and Baltimore County. If you are a woman you should NEVER be by yourself. These trails are magnet for crime and bring it in the community. In Paradise a group of people came off the trail at night, jumped in the owners swimming and drank liquor--had a great time. Now they have gone to great expense to put up a huge privacy fence that the county should pay for. Kids have gone off the trail and destroyed a lot of work the students have done Western Vo Tech. In Ferndale (AAC) the light rail came, crime increased and people there want the stop closed. Get the picture? Crime statistics are a lot higher then reported. Crime is getting worse in Catonsville due to the Frederick Rd drug pipeline from the city (Irvington) and on out. Paradise has had this problem for over 10 years, although the county would deny this. Happy trails to you!

the Luddites are looking for a leader - the expansion of these trails has not lead to the crimes - the culture of the people did - complain about and work towards changing the culture not about letting "those people" in your neighborhood.

I have to say, after living in a community Severna Park ( severnapark.patch.com ) that boarders the B&A trail growing up, the bike trail there a great asset to the community, attracting foot traffic for local businesses, events such as walks runs & triathlons, providing a great place for people to exercise and commute to downtown Annapolis.

Something like this is NEVER a bad idea people, get over yourselves. When's the last time Arbutus seemed anything like a college town to you?? News flash: it Is. And ppl come from all over the world to attend this honors university &what have we got to offer them? Trendy businesses that try to appeal to the crowd but no means of bringing them in and eventually fail. More means of transportation means more traffic people!
